Electrolytes are important in establishing osmotic pressure. (Remember: Milliosmol (mOsm) is the unit used in measuring osmotic activity) How many milliosmols of particles does 1 mole of sodium chloride present?
A. 1 mOsm.
B. 2 mOsm.
C. 3 mOsm.
D. 4 mOsm.
The total number of particles in a solution affects osmotic pressure. If we assume complete dissociation, 1 mole of sodium chloride is composed of 2 mOsm of total particles (ie., Na+ and Cl-).
