If x represents any even number and y represents any odd number, which of the following numbers is even?
A. y + 2
B. x - 1
C. (x + 1)(y - 1)
D. y(y+2)
E. x+y
Since x represents any even number and y represents any odd number, let x = 2 and y = 3. Evaluate the expression in each of the answer choices until you find one that produces an even number:
* (A) y + 2 = 3 + 2 = 5
* (B) x - 1 = 2 -1 = 1
* (C) (x + 1)(y - 1) = (2 + 1) = (3 - 1) = (3)(2) = 6. There is no need to go further as this is the correct choice.
